Course Description

This course is about children with diverse abilities and is based on a philosophy of inclusion. Designed for generalist pre-service teachers it is premised on principles of social justice, human and children’s rights and anti-discrimination. An inclusive educational setting provides for all the children in the community. Using a strengths focus, accepting the principle of partial participation and acknowledging that all children can learn, the course examines the potential of the regular setting to provide relevant and high quality learning experiences for all children. Variations in development, including giftedness are explored.   This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience.

Program Learning Outcomes You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:   - Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.   - Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making to enhance your practice and continuing professional development.


Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:   1. To become familiar with government policy related to education, inclusion and children with disabilities   2. To explore issues of children’s and families rights within the culture of education   3. To examine common variations in development, including giftedness   4. To apply general methods of observation, programming and planning to an inclusive context   5. To be aware of the theoretical and philosophical approaches that impact upon educational practice and relationships within the education context   6. To gain skills in adapting modalities of the general education context to optimise learning opportunities.   7. Engage professionally in an education setting with colleagues parents, carers and the community   8. Apply strategies to create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research. Lectures, tutorials, group activities and collaborative work on assessment tasks.   Work integrated learning is a major teaching and learning theme for this course and it puts you at the centre of the learning process and makes you responsible for your learning. This teaching team will support you in the development, progress and completion of your assessment tasks. This course involves the successful completion of professional experience; learning activities will ask you to link theory with practical areas of the profession in a variety of educational settings.


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. There is no prescribed text for this course. Suggested readings from current educational literature will be provided on the course website and will be drawn from highly regarded academic journals, books and conferences as well as reports, websites and other online resources.   The University Library has extensive resources for teacher education students. Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.  Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.   Assessment may include Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups, for example: Assessment Task 1 – Inclusive Strategies for two conditions/disabilities (50%) CLO1, CLO2, CLO 3 Assessment Task 2 – Planning for an Individual Child, implementation and Mentor report  CLO4, CLO5, CLO6, CLO7, CLO8   Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.   If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods.
