Course Description

In this course you will focus on the place of health education in the primary school curriculum. You will consider and discuss health issues such as wellbeing, grief, mental health, sexuality, drug education and nutrition. You will focus on planning of health education, curriculum design and approaches to teaching health. You will critically examine the educational policies that impact on health education and the appropriate use of health resources and working with health promoting organisations. Broader issues such as the social and cultural aspects of health education, discomfort, controversy and working with parents/guardians and the community on health issues will also be introduced. You will also explore issues and approaches to teacher wellbeing.

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

Overview of Assessment

 

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

Task 1: Health Debate (40%) Research and analyse a topical issue related to health education.   Developing a series of arguments based on a standpoint and formulating possible rebuttals to opposing standpoints. Identify possible strategies for discussing these issues with parents. Present your debate as a podcast or infographic. CLO2, CLO3, CLO5

Task 2: Health Unit Plan (40%) Design a unit of work Design a unit plan for Health Education in a primary school setting that uses the collaborative inquiry cycle which consists of: asses, design, implementation and measurement/reflect/change. CLO1, CLO3, CLO4

Task 3: Teacher wellbeing strategies (20%) Develop a collection of strategies you will adopt to ensure your wellbeing as a teacher. CLO6
