Course Description

During this course you will explore the theories of early literacy development, foundation to Year 2. Speaking and Listening, Reading and Viewing, and Writing are the important literacy modes. You will examine the processes and skills of these modes to understand how they contribute to students’ successful development in early literacy. This course will assist you in understanding a range of assessment strategies for reading and writing and how assessment is integral to the learning and teaching of literacy in Foundation to Year 2. You will develop a literacy portfolio which includes a repertoire of literature and literacy resources, written and digital, for your future teaching. You will use this portfolio to reflect on the development of your own literacy understandings, strengths and growth.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning.

AT1:

Part 1: Analysis of an academic text that links literacy theory to practice. (25%) CLO1, CLO6 

Part 2: Test of the metalanguage and content knowledge of literacy (25%) CLO1, CLO2, CLO3

 

AT2: Oral presentation of Literacy Portfolio (50%) CLO3, CLO4, CLO5.

During this oral presentation, you will use this portfolio to reflect on, and demonstrate the development of your own literacy understandings, strengths and growth during this course.

The Literacy portfolio will include the items below. All items will be annotated to demonstrate the significance and/or theoretical underpinning of the items.

These will be discussed in the oral presentation.

• Reading Log – including academic literacy texts and a repertoire of literature (both written and digital) suitable for Foundation to 2
• Resources and learning and assessment strategies that relate directly to F-2 literacy learning
