Course Description

This course provides you with opportunities to begin to demonstrate your understanding of the nexus between the theories and practice of teaching. Drawing on a range of research and through application in practical settings you will begin to develop an understanding of; learner characteristics; principles of learning and teaching; classroom management strategies; and the importance of developing a professional learning trajectory. You will be assessed on your ability: to implement a range of teaching strategies; design effective learning sequences; and critically reflect on your own professional needs. You will also continue to maintain your evidentiary portfolio. This course is one of a sequence of professional experience (work integrated learning) courses designed to develop your knowledge and skills to teach in educational settings. It has an embedded placement component in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

• Critically analyse and apply educational research to your professional practice, demonstrating inclusive, learner focused, evidence-based teaching.
• Consolidate and synthesise expert content and pedagogical knowledge and judgement to develop highly effective and innovative teaching skills in an area of specialisation.
• Demonstrate a capacity for critically reflective practice including social, environmental and cultural professional awareness in both local and global contexts.
• Communicate and engage professionally and ethically with students, colleagues, parents, carers and education stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
• Show commitment to ongoing professional learning, particularly in relation to meeting the Australian Graduate Standards for Teachers.

Your learning in this course will involve a range of face-to-face and online activities including lectures, workshops, practical activities, individual tasks, collaborative group work, discussion and individual reflection. Your learning in this course will also involve professional experience in an educational setting.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. In order to pass the course, you are required to receive a satisfactory assessment on your professional experience, in accordance with expectations outlined in the PX Handbook for the course. If you fail to meet this requirement, for reasons other than those approved by special considerations, you will not pass the course. If granted Special Consideration, you may become eligible to complete alternative professional experience to pass the course.

Assessment in this course is directly connected to your successful participation in professional experience. The end-of-placement report from your supervising teacher(s) on your professional development and participation in professional experience is an important component of your assessment. It will provide evidence of your ability to demonstrate the relevant professional practices and course learning outcomes specifically associated with the assessment tasks in the course.
