Assumed Knowledge

All First and Second Year Courses (including electives) must have been successfully completed. In addition, students must have completed at least one major prior to undertaking professional practice placement.


Course Description

This course includes a Work Integrated Learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real workplace context and where feedback from industry is integral to your experience.

This course is conducted as a co-operative education sandwich course during which you undertake a program of supervised professional practice in either medical research or hospital or private pathology laboratory affiliated with the department, for the purposes of educating and training future diagnostic or research Medical Scientists.

At any time prior to or during your placement if there are concerns raised related to your fitness to practice the WIL coordinator can request that you gain full medical clearance to continue your placement.

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1.  Describe what is covered by occupational health and safety (OH&S), equal opportunity, professional duty of care, ethics, and the need for effective communication and team work.
  2. Discuss the importance of the workplace structure both in general and within your placement organisation and the roles and accountabilities of employees of this organisation.
  3.  Discuss the importance of, and be able to apply, sustainability concepts within the placement laboratory.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding and provide examples of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) in the placement laboratory.
  5. Discuss internal Quality Control (IQC), external Quality Assurance (EQA) and total quality management (TQM) in medical laboratories, and explain accreditation procedures in relation to ISO15189.
  6. Discuss the application of medical informatics such as Laboratory Information System, Point of Care Test (POCT) and laboratory automation in a medical laboratory environment


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.

Overview of Assessment

This course contains hurdle requirements. All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the College Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching).

Hurdle requirements: The evidence provided for each of the competency standards must be satisfactory. You have completed 100 days of placement during the entire duration of placement.
