Successful completion of Youth Work 4: Field Education 2 (Working with Industry) 

HWSS2233 Youth Work 5: Field Education 3 is interchangeable with HWSS2232 Youth Work 4: Field Education 2 upon approval by the Program Manager. Prior to receiving approval, you must have completed or received credit for the prerequisites associated with HWSS2232 Youth Work 4: Field Education 2:  

  • HWSS2229 - Youth Work 1: An Introduction to the Field 
  • HWSS2230 - Youth Work 2: Field Education 1 (Engaging in Industry) 
  • HWSS2228 - The Ethics of Being Professional

Course Description

This course is the second Youth Work professional placement experience. It includes a 30 day work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience. 

Whereas in your previous placement, you undertook structured and supervised tasks and projects, this course focuses on your capability to perform the role of a Youth Worker in a supervised setting. This course specifically focuses on the application of skills and knowledge related to advocacy, casework, project work and evaluation, in working with young people. In this placement, you will demonstrate your competence in professional practice to undertake supervised practice in the field. 

You will draw upon previous studies regarding youth work practice skills, ethics, policy, and understandings of youth and young people and their social contexts, to undertake your supervised practice in the field.   

In the classroom, in structured sessions, you will engage in group supervision and exploration of your WIL experience and emerging youth work practice. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes 

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes: 

  • Apply interdisciplinary bodies of theoretical knowledge and practical wisdom and skills to the scholarship of Youth Studies, praxis of Youth Work and orientation to professional human services.


Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Apply Youth Work knowledge and skills to a Youth related setting to perform role of Youth Worker under supervision. 
  2. Demonstrate ability to recognise, respond to and evaluate macro-level changes for the benefit of young people 
  3. Manage case data and interactions appropriately, identifying and communicating relevant information to stakeholders and other agencies. 
  4. Critically evaluate your efficacy, professionalism and effectiveness in regard to the work you have undertaken, drawing upon the feedback, artefacts and evidence. 
  5. Work as part of a Youth Work team/agency demonstrating an ethical orientation, representation of organisational values and professional presentation. 


Overview of Learning Activities

This course is situated within a Youth Work or Youth Sector setting, where you will assume the role of Youth Worker under supervision. 

To support your success in the professional setting, you will also attend six face-to-face group supervision sessions at the University. Through the method of group-supervision, these sessions will focus on induction, orientation, assessment expectations, skills development and de-briefing and group-supervision. 

Throughout your placement, you will have access to online learning modules, an industry supervisor and point of contact at the University.


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. This includes resources such as weekly readings, assessment supports, requirements for workshop and seminar participation and notes from classes.

The University Library has extensive resources for Youth Work students. The Library has produced a number of subject guides that includes quality online and print resources for your studies.

There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

It is a requirement of this course that your pass your placement. This is a pass/fail requisite assessed by the Course Coordinators considering the feedback with the Supervisor Evaluation Form and from your RMIT Liaison Person. 

Assessment Tasks

Task 1: Learning Plan & Assessment Report, 2000 words (+/- 10%), 50%, CLO 1, 2, 3, 4,

Task 2: Reflective Case Study, 2000 words (+/- 10%), 50%, CLO 1, 2

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
