Course Description

This course introduces you to bio-informed strategies in the context of generating sustainable fashion and textiles. You will explore a range of material practices such as bio-plastics, bio-materials, and bio-mimicry. You will explore and experiment with biological materials to consider how can we collaborate with nature to develop new sustainable materials. You will also examine developments and trends to understand current limitations and emerging opportunities.

As this is a program option course, only Course Learning Outcomes are applicable.


Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1: Identify and discuss bio design examples in the context of sustainable fashion and textiles.

CLO2: Utilise iterative bio-informed strategies for the development and communication of bio design material concepts.

CLO3: Critically reflect through your process of developing bio design materials for fashion and textiles.

Your learning will be facilitated via a range of in-class and online activities that will require both individual and collaborative engagement. Class activities will promote your ability to propose, investigate, plan, analyse, and realise sustainable innovative fashion and textile solutions.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment tasks are directly aligned with each Course Learning Outcome.  They are as follows:

Assessment Task 1: Lab workbook (50%) 
CLOs: 1, 2 & 3

Assessment Task 2: Bio Design Concept (50%) 
CLOs: 1, 2 & 3
