Course Description

This course introduces you to key social, environmental and political issues underpinning sustainable innovation in the fashion and textiles industry.  Socio-technical and circular economy principles will provide a framework within which to analyse the complex networks of production, use and disposal of fashion and textile products, and their impacts on society and the planet. You will investigate current industry practices and evaluate emerging alternatives, giving consideration to the requirements for widespread positive change within the sector.

Program Learning Outcomes 

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

PLO1: Demonstrate and apply a diverse and industry-relevant body of skills and knowledge in sustainable innovation for the fashion and textiles industry, related fields and emerging markets.

PLO2: Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on sustainable innovation in both local and international contexts.

PLO3: Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse contexts within the field of fashion and textiles sustainable innovation.

Course Learning outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO 1: Identify and explain key social, environmental and/or ethical issues within the local and global fashion and textiles industry.

CLO 2: Analyse contemporary and emerging sustainable and innovation strategies in fashion and textiles.

CLO 3: Identify, evaluate and cite a variety of research sources appropriate to academic writing.

Overview of Learning Activities

Your learning will be facilitated via a range of in-class online and self-directed activities that will require both individual and collaborative engagement. Class activities will promote your ability to investigate, plan, analyse, prototype, and realise ideas for fashion and textile based sustainable innovation.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

Assessment tasks are directly aligned with each Course Learning Outcome. They are as follows:
