Course Description
This course explores the potential for material innovation and expressions through materiality, practical experiments and iterative ideation. You will explore emerging material trends, hybrid craft techniques and processes. You will practice techniques that are widely employed in industry for materials characterisation and applications. You will explore techniques and processes such as chemical treatments, dyeing and finishing, coating, binding, thermoplastics and heat, amalgamate, fuse and pleat for the development of new material experiences.
You will also examine how to ensure an ethical and responsible approach to material innovation.

Course Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
CLO 1: Identify and discuss examples of emerging material trends and material innovations.
CLO 2: Characterise material properties and apply emerging material trends, future craft techniques and technologies to develop hybrid materials and composites.
CLO 3: Demonstrate and explain what considerations are needed to ensure responsible material innovation.

Your learning will be facilitated via a range of in-class and online activities that will require both individual and collaborative engagement. Class activities will promote your ability to propose, investigate, plan, analyse, prototype, and realise ideas for fashion and textile based sustainable innovation.
