Successful completion of GRAP2816 Fashion and Textile Materials.

Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.

Course Description

This course explores how textile materials can be smart and active in low tech to high tech ways by being interactive, transformative, aesthetically active, adaptive, functional and responsive to natural factors (e.g. sunlight) or to stimuli. You will examine and explore textile materials as active, smart and connected. You will consider how a material’s properties can respond and change to an external force, sensor or input. You will explore textile materials, structures and systems through multidisciplinary approaches.

As this is a program option course, only Course Learning Outcomes are applicable.

Course Learning outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO 1: Identify and discuss emerging trends in smart and active textile material examples. 

CLO 2: Explain how textile materials can be smart and active in different ways.  

CLO 3: Apply a range of textile techniques and processes to develop a smart or active textile material.

Your learning will be facilitated via a range of in-class and online activities that will require both individual and collaborative engagement. Class activities will promote your ability to propose, investigate, plan, analyse, and realise sustainable innovative fashion and textile solutions.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

Assessment tasks are directly aligned with each Course Learning Outcome.  They are as follows:

Assessment Task 1: Mini review of smart and active textile materials (20%)
CLOs: 1 & 2

Assessment Task 2: Creative and Technical Folio (40%)
CLOs: 2 & 3

Assessment Task 3: Individual project (40%)
CLOs: 1, 2 & 3
