Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.

Course Description
This course will explore flexible sensors and components for e-textiles and the Internet of Things (IoT) to support the development of smart textiles and fashion wearables. In doing so, you will consider the viability of wear, safety and laundering, and the relationship between wearable technology, user’s bodies and their needs.
You will explore how to embed, combine, connect electronics with textile materials (soft and hard components). You will be introduced to basic electronics and programming, working with soft actuators, sensors, conductive threads. You will also explore how these can be combined with textile processes such as embroidery, beading, printing, braiding, weaving and knitting.

As this is a program option course, only Course Learning Outcomes are applicable.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
CLO 1: Identify and discuss examples of fashion and textiles wearables.
CLO 2: Apply a range of different components, materials and sensors for the design of simple wearables.
CLO 3: Identify and explain what considerations are needed to ensure the viability of wear.
CLO 4 : Critically discuss the relationship between the body, wearable technology and user needs.

Your learning will be facilitated via a range of in-class and online activities that will require both individual and collaborative engagement. Class activities will promote your ability to propose, investigate, plan, analyse, and realise sustainable innovative fashion and textile solutions.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment tasks are directly aligned with each Course Learning Outcome.
Assessment Tasks:
Assessment Task 1: Folio tasks (25% + 25%), CLOs 1 & 2
Assessment Task 2: Viability Assessment (20%), CLOs 2, 3 & 4
Assessment Task 3: Wearable prototype and report (30%), CLOs 2, 3 & 4
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
