Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Required Prior Study
Successful completion of GRAP2837 Transforming Fashion Design Materials.
Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.
Course Description
In this course you will be investigating and proposing alternatives to the dominant material structures of the fashion and textiles industry by critically analysing the emerging field of biomaterials and biofabrication.
Natural materials grow, respond to their environments and decay. This process is driven by invisible collaborations between naturally occurring bacteria and neighbouring microorganisms. While the majority of current manufacturing methods aim to stifle these natural processes, you will be looking towards a future where we encourage and collaborate with living entities such as fungi, algae and bacteria.
By exploring and analysing practices related to biodesign, synthetic biology, and interspecies collaboration you will gain an understanding of the larger discourses and debates around these nascent materials and production methods, and how they can contribute to the development of alternative fashion practices.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
As this is a program option course, only Course Learning Outcomes are applicable.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
CLO 1: Analyse, examine, and frame knowledge relating to emerging design practices, strategies and contexts in the field of biodesign.
CLO 2: Demonstrate an understanding of the context of biodesign approaches in relation to the wider discussions of sustainability and change in the fashion industry.
CLO 3: Synthesise research and learning into proposals for new methods, products, or processes that contribute to and respond to emerging fashion design practices.
Overview of Learning Activities
Your learning will be facilitated via a range of in-class and online activities that will require both individual and collaborative engagement. Class activities promote your ability to explore design, investigate, analyse and understand fashion practice.
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.
A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.
RMIT Library provides extensive resources for fashion and textiles students.
Search the library and consult the Fashion and Textiles Subject Guides for more information.
The library also provides guides on academic referencing and assistance is available via phone, chat and email.
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
Assessment tasks are directly aligned with each Course Learning Outcome. They are as follows:
Assessment Task 1: CONNECT (Digital Map) (20%)
CLOs: 1 & 2
Assessment Task 2:
PROPOSE- PART A (Group Project Agreement) (5%)
PROPOSE- PART B (Group Presentation and Artefacts) (40%)
CLOs: 2 & 3
Assessment Task 3: FIELD NOTES (35%)
CLOs: 1, 2 & 3
If you have a long-term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or Equitable Learning Services if you would like to find out more.
Your course assessment conforms to RMIT assessment principles, regulations, policies, procedures and instructions.
