Course Description

This is a core course for three undergraduate programs in the School of Fashion and Textiles:

• BP121 Bachelor of Textiles (Design)
• BP328 Bachelor of Fashion (Design)
• BP326 Bachelor of Fashion and Textiles (Sustainable Innovation)

This course will explore everyday fashion and textile materials and poses the question: how can we make considered choices?

You will be introduced to the fundamental principles of textile fibres and fabrics through a sustainability lens, and develop a broad knowledge of the language, properties, performance and manufacturing processes associated with a range of fashion and textile materials. You will also examine the connection between a material’s properties, performance, material expression and the user experience.

Program Learning Outcomes 

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

BP121 Bachelor of Textiles (Design):
PLO 2: Develop conceptual, creative, technical and digital skills to deepen and synthesise knowledge of textile design applications and technologies.

BP328 Bachelor of Fashion (Design):
PLO1: Demonstrate extensive and coherent knowledge of fashion design with depth and expertise in one or more areas of practice.
PLO3:  Apply fashion design knowledge and skills to identify and creatively respond to contemporary issues in local and global practice.
PLO5:  Demonstrate creative, critical fashion design and thinking that recognises the key concerns of contemporary fashion design industries. 

BP326 Bachelor of Fashion and Textiles (Sustainable Innovation):
PLO 1: Demonstrate and apply a diverse and industry-relevant body of skills and knowledge in sustainable innovation for the fashion and textiles industry, related fields and emerging markets.

Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO 1: Identify, classify and discuss the properties, performance and manufacturing processes of different materials.

CLO 2: Assess the suitability of a fabric for a variety of fashion and textile outcomes within the context of sustainability, and global fashion and textile trends. 

CLO 3: Describe the connection between a material’s properties and performance, material expression and the user experience.

Your learning will be facilitated via a range of in-class, online and self-directed activities that will require both individual and collaborative engagement. Class activities will promote your ability to investigate, analyse and make informed material choices.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. 

Assessment tasks are directly aligned with each Course Learning Outcome.  They are as follows:

Assessment Task 1: Making Textiles (20%)
CLO: 1 & 3

Assessment Task 2: Fabric Story (30%)
CLOs: 1 & 2

Assessment Task 3:  Textiles Investigation and Application (50%)
CLOs: 1, 2 & 3
