Course Description

In this course you will build knowledge and skills of various ways to represent concepts and design ideas including fashion image, drawing creation techniques and fashion writing. The methods you will learn will include both traditional formats alongside digital image making techniques. You will experience a range of different methods for expressing fashion ideas. 

There are many different ways in which we communicate and share fashion concepts and ideas with other designers, producers, suppliers within the fashion industry, members of the design team and to professionals and practitioners beyond the field of fashion. The aim of this course is to expand your knowledge of fashion expressions such as colour, sound, touch, image, video and text through a series of projects. The course will enable you to effectively express your design ideas through a variety of media and channels.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes 

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

PLO 2: Develop conceptual, technical, creative and communication skills to deepen and consolidate knowledge of fashion design.

PLO 4: Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on fashion design knowledge and techniques, in local and global practices

PLO 6: Communicate and produce fashion using a diverse range of presentation mediums and materials in industry specific and broader design contexts

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO 1: Explore a range of methods for expressing fashion ideas

CLO 2: Transmit fashion ideas using media and channels relevant to the fashion industry and creative disciplines.

CLO 3: Apply technical knowledge in one or more disciplines or areas of practice

Overview of Learning Activities

Your learning will be facilitated via a range of in-class and online activities that will require both individual and collaborative engagement. Class activities promote your ability to explore design, investigate, analyse and understand fashion practice.  Delivery will be on Brunswick campus.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.   Assessment tasks are directly aligned with each Course Learning Outcome. They are as follows:   Assessment 1: Poster (Presentation) (20%) CLO 1, CLO 2   Assessment 2: Experimental Spreads (Presentation) (30%) CLO 1, CLO 3   Assessment 3: Mini Fashion Zine (50%) CLO 1, CLO 2   Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.   If you have a long-term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods.
