Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Required Concurrent Study

You should undertake ARCH1500 Partnered Interior Design Studio 4 at the same time as this course as it contains areas of knowledge and skills which are implemented together in practice.

Required Prior Study

You should have satisfactorily completed the prerequisite course ARCH1497 Partnered Interior Design Studio 3 before you commence this course.

Course Description

The course will support you in identifying, evaluating and communicating key areas of interest, skills and expertise that form a profile of practice that enables you to position yourself within the design profession.

You will curate and present your work developed in the partnered interior design studios at a high professional standard though development and production of a digital portfolio. Through this process you will synthesise aspects of your interior design practice, reflect on and communicate your position within the design profession.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Establish modes of practice that initiate and execute substantial Interior Design projects situated in contemporary interior design.
  • Use high level research principles and methods that enable a critical and strategic approach to Interior Design practice that demonstrate autonomy and accountability within a professional context.
  • Effectively and fluently disseminate design research to specialist and non-specialist audiences through a mastery of communication skills in a range of forms and media which shows a sophisticated understanding of the technical and theoretical frameworks of Interior Design.


Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Determine a future direction of your design practice by situating your design work in relation to a wider context of Interior Design issues and a community of practitioners.
  • Reflect on the quality and attributes of your design studio projects undertaken through the Masters.
  • Develop and produce a professional portfolio displaying proficiencies and skills in the curation, understanding, visual presentation and communication of your work.


Overview of Learning Activities

The course is taught through a series of intensives supported by ancillary lectures and online resources. The mode of learning in the studio is primarily through ’practice and doing’. You will present ongoing draft documents through verbal presentations and by uploading digital submissions for regular feedback.

At the end of the semester you will present your completed portfolio to an assessment panel of staff from the course teaching team.


Overview of Learning Resources

You will identify the learning resources specific to your own interests in conjunction with your tutors. These may include readings, critical study of precedents, and further refinement of the communication, workshop, and other skills that you have acquired in the previous levels of the course. RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities. The evidence for your learning outcomes will be in the research tasks you present through a variety of visual and verbal means.
