Course Description

This course provides you with a foundation to the media and communication industries covered in the Professional Communication program, with a focus on interdisciplinarity. You will explore the core concepts and theories in the study of communication, and be introduced to industry practices, creative idea development and applied project work.   You will examine professional communication processes, practices, and perspectives, and investigate the way communication operates in different social, cultural, political, ethical, and organisational contexts.   Through a series of workshops and case studies you will examine industry trends and tensions, and develop your understanding about interdisciplinarity, and the intersections between the disciplines of advertising, journalism, media production, and public relations.   This course emphasises the importance of audience, purpose, and context as essential structuring elements in communication, and encourages creative, innovative, resilient, ethical, and collaborative professional practices.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes 

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes: 

  • Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse contexts within the professional communication field.
  • Communicate using diverse formats and strategies to audiences within and external to your discipline.
  • Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice. 


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:   1. Explain and discuss different disciplinary theories, issues, principles and practices, and their relevance and implications for professional communication. 2. Identify, analyse and evaluate different communication artefacts and issues. 3. Apply an interdisciplinary approach to analysis and problem solving in professional communication contexts. 4. Use design processes to engage in creative problem solving and the development of communication solutions and project ideas. 5. Identify, apply and reflect on effective work practices and strategies for working in small teams.

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.   Assessment tasks   1. Critical portfolio, weighting 40% (individual) Addresses Program Learning Outcomes 2 and 4, and Course Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, and 5   3.
