Course Description

In this course, you will explore the connection between medium and ideation as you develop general technical skills in key design processes. By working with generative techniques, visual hierarchies, graphic composition, and time-based narratives you will develop judgement in the appropriate application of various media in the generation of concepts and the realisation of design outcomes. Upon successful completion of this course, you will have essential understanding of the importance of the critical integration of design medium, process, and ideation in order to communicate concepts.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Analyse and articulate the connection between design media and ideation.
  2. Apply judgement in the application of design media, techniques and processes.
  3. Integrate a range of design media, techniques and processes to produce creative outcomes.
  4. Identify, present and critically discuss choices in the realisation of design projects.


Overview of Learning Activities

This elective focuses on project-based learning in a tutorial environment, where in addition to lecturers, presentations and learning resources, you focus on weekly development of your project, with critique, discussion on self-directed development.


Overview of Learning Resources

Specific learning resources including readings will be made available to you at the start of the course. This course will utilise online learning materials and use easily available software.

A list of required and recommended reading will be provided by your lecturer. You are also expected to find some of your own references, specific to your individual and group exercises.    RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course though our online systems.    The RMIT Library has extensive resources for design students. The library has produced subject guides that include quality online and print resources for your studies: http://rmit.libguides.com/?b=s The library also provides guides on academic referencing: http://www.rmit.edu.au/library/referencing

You are expected to bring your own laptop (or have access to a laptop) for the duration of the elective (and have administration rights for this laptop to install software).

You are recommended to have drawing supplies (pens, paper, sketchbooks) and cover expenses relating to printing - using RMIT print facilities - dependant on your project outcomes. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment tasks may include written assignments, practical exercises, projects, and presentations (individual or group). Your level of participation in class activities and discussion is also taken into consideration and forms 10% of your overall mark. An assessment rubric for participation will be collectively developed (students and teacher) in the first class.
