Course Description

This course introduces you to the legal needs of enterprises including technological, social enterprise start-ups. You will engage with industry partner, and using the techniques of design thinking in law analyse the needs of a business or organisation. You will collaborate on a presentation or “pitch” to an industry partner addressing the legal needs of their problem. This course includes a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a simulated workplace context and where feedback from the industry and/or community is integral to your experience. This course is based on a simulation advising enterprises on their legal issues.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will:

CLO1: Critique and assess the role of enterprises including technological, social enterprise start-ups in disrupting business and legal regulation. CLO2: Analyse the legal needs of a start-up enterprise as part of a simulation with an industry partner and integrate industry feedback and the use of design thinking in law to meet those needs. CLO3: Research and apply principles of law to the problems associated with an enterprise. CLO4: Communicate in ways that are effective, appropriate and persuasive for legal and non-legal audiences; and collaborate effectively. CLO5: Reflect on and assess personal capabilities and performance in a professional context, and make use of feedback as appropriate, to support personal and professional development.

Overview of Learning Activities

To achieve its objectives this unit requires you to participate as an active learner. You will develop your knowledge and skills through both the course materials supplied and your own self-directed research and intellectual inquiry. You will engage in activities including reading and reflecting on key literature on contract and intellectual property law, as well as innovative technological legal issues, engagement with specific enterprise and start-up problems, and participating in group problem solving exercises and presentations. Your learning will be supported through various in-class and online activities comprising individual and group work. These may include quizzes; assignments; prescribed readings; sourcing, researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; conducting presentations; producing written work and collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects.
