Course Description

This course introduces you to the core tax legislation in Australia and provide you with the skills needed to identify legal tax issues and apply the relevant tax rules (both statute and case law based) to legal scenarios.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

CLO1: Conduct independent legal research into the relevant tax rules that apply to a legal scenario.

CLO2: Critically evaluate aspects of the Australian tax system, including judicial reasoning in case law.

CLO3: Analyse legal scenarios and apply legal rules to determine the net GST payable / refundable for a taxpayer and to determine the income tax payable of a taxpayer.

CLO4: Apply the rules relating to the pay-as-you-go (PAYG) system and the income tax self-assessment system to determine a taxpayer’s tax payable.


Overview of Learning Activities

To achieve the objectives this course requires you to participate in various learning activities. These activities comprise of lectures, tutorials, self-directed learning, participation through in- class and online activities, legal writing exercises, collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects, and a final examination. Combination of slides and tutorials and / or team-based learning activities depending on numbers of enrolled students.
