Course Description

Electronic health records (EHR) are foundational to digital health. They are repositories of data concerning health service delivery and increasingly for curated data captured outside health services. They comprise a substantial platform with which to integrate other clinical support and patient engagement technologies. In Data and Electronic Health Records you will examine a variety of related technologies that are enabling patient and consumer centred healthcare and advanced clinical practice. You will analyse the contributions that these technologies make to better health for all, along with the associated ethical, regulatory, workplace and other sociotechnical challenges.

Topics include appraising clinical and societal issues in the capture, storage and use of electronic health record data, assessing the potential of new data sources, and investigating factors associated with appropriate, safe and effective EHR implementation and use.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for GC191 Graduate Certificate in Digital Health:

  • PLO 2 - Evaluate the importance of data, information and knowledge management in digital health and the implications for effective governance in both health service delivery and citizens’ rights.
