Course Description

Digital technologies have emerged as the primary platform to support communication, collaboration, centralized storage, research, decision making, and problem solving in the health sector. This course aims to prepares you to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to be competent in the use of digital technology for a variety of health care services and treatments. The main focus of this unit is on modelling and problem solving through the effective use of Digital Technologies including 3D scanning and additive manufacturing of body parts. You will be taught core skills related to digital technologies in the areas of remote consultation, patient data storage/retrieve, personal care equipment, disease diagnosis and prevention, wireless body area networks, assistive healthcare systems, wearable sensors and implantable devices. You will undertake practical tasks including 3D scanning, redesign and manufacture human body parts. You will learn application of digital technologies in enterprise healthcare information systems such as Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), Radiology IS, Electronic Health Records / Personal Health Records, Health data management, Healthcare Transactions, Health Statistics and Research, Cost Assessments, Ethics / Privacy, TeleHealth / eHealth.

1.3. In depth practical knowledge and skills within specialist sub-disciplines of the practice area.
1.5. Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the practice area.
1.6. Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the area of practice.
2.1. Application of established technical and practical methods to the solution of well-defined engineering problems.
2.2. Application of technical and practical techniques, tools and resources to well defined engineering problems.
3.1. Ethical conduct and professional accountability
3.2. Effective oral and written communication in professional and lay domains.
3.5. Orderly management of self, and professional conduct.
3.6. Effective team membership and team leadership.

On completion of this course you should be able to:
1. Describe digital transformation in the health care system
2. Identify various digital technologies currently used in the health care system
3. Use appropriate digital applications to securely store and retrieve medical information
4. Use CAD/CAM software to scan 3D models of human body parts
5. Redesign 3D model of a human body part from scanned data as per specifications
6. Demonstrate the skills to operate 3D printers to manufacture human body parts

Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities included in this course are:
This is a hands-on and practice-oriented course. It is delivered through lectures, tutorials and practical lab sessions in the computer laboratory and the advanced manufacturing laboratory. You need to attend lectures/tutorials/labs where syllabus material will be presented with examples and practical demonstrations. By completing the tutorial questions, assignment, and laboratory exercises, you will gain further practical knowledge and skills used in the use of digital technologies in Health Care system. You will also be working in teams on practical projects which involve both design and manufacturing processes.

Overview of Learning Resources

You will be able to access course information and learning materials through the course CANVAS. Your course CANVAS will give you access to important course-related information such as announcements, staff contact details, online lecture notes and exercises, tutorials, assignment, and other learning resources. Access to CANVAS will be instructed in detail during the course introduction session. Lists of relevant reference books and digitalized materials at RMIT libraries will be available as well. You will also use laboratory equipment and computer software within the School for the project work.
You are advised to check your student e-mail account daily for important announcements.
