Course Description

In this course you will explore the concept of ‘mobilities’ in terms of the movement of people (human migration, individual mobility, travel, transport), and the broader social implications of those movements. You will be introduced to the many practices and experiences of contemporary Asian mobilities and how they impact cultures, societies, communities, economies and politics. The course will draw on theoretical approaches from mobility and migration frameworks to investigate, reveal and recognise the many types of Asian mobilities which occur across transnational, interstate and intrastate lines. You will explore the diverse impact of Asian mobilities on contemporary relationships, identities, histories, customs, economies, policies, narratives and imagery.

If you are enrolled in this course as a Minor studies course or an option you will develop the following program learning outcome:

  • Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on professional communication in both local and global contexts
  • Identify, evaluate and critically analyse cultural, social, political and theoretical practices which contextualise your professional practice and further study 


Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  1. Discuss theories of Asian mobilities and their impact on cultural, societal, community, economic and political practices and experiences.
  2. Explain what are contemporary Asian mobilities, when they occur and how they evolve.
  3. Analyse Asian mobilities and their impacts on practices, experiences and cultures on the destination environment (i.e. destination countries, societies and communities).
  4. Evaluate the destination countries’ social, cultural, political and economic impacts on the Asian diasporic communities they host or are home to.

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities which may include project work, lectures, tutorials, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment may include written and oral reports, reflective papers, creative projects and presentations, individually and in groups. 

Assessment Task

1. Reflective Short Essay:  Weighting: 30 % (Individual Assessment) Addressing course learning outcomes: 2, 3, 4 

2. Research Presentation: Weighting: 30% (Individual Assessment) Addressing course learning outcomes: 2, 3 

3. Group Research Project (Asian mobilities case study): Weighting: 40% (Group Assessment) Addressing course learning outcomes: 1, 3, 4
