Course Description

In this course you will examine the impact of technologies, industries and audiences on the production of meaning in film texts. You will explore: extra-textual elements including publicity, marketing and advertising within film and media industries; the impact of new technologies such as sound, wide-screen and streaming; censorship in film and television; and particular reception contexts.

Program Learning Outcomes 

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcome: 

  • Identify, evaluate and critically analyse cultural, historical and theoretical practices which contextualise your professional practice and further study. 


Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  1. Describe the extra-textual factors that affect the production of meaning, including filmmaking, distribution, exhibition and reception contexts.
  2. Read specific cinematic texts in relation to their historical and industrial contexts.
  3. Critically discuss the cinema as a changing technological and industrial complex.
  4. Describe and analyse meaning production in the cinema as a product of the interplay between textual and contextual elements

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. 

Assessment Tasks 

There are three assessment tasks. 

Task 1: Extra-textual analysis (20%) (CLO 1 & 2) 

Task 2: Exhibition contexts case study (35%) (CLO 1, 2 & 3) 

Task 3: Research Essay (45%) (CLO 1, 2, 3 & 4)

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
