Course Description
In this course you will explore the notion of ‘national cinema’ as a social, industrial, critical and political concept. You will examine the role played by nation and national identity in understanding and interpreting specific films, genres, production processes and screen cultures, and explores connections between contemporary cinema and film history. You will also analyse the relation between specific ‘national cinemas’ and the forces of diversification, internationalisation and globalisation.

- Identify, evaluate and critically analyse cultural, historical and theoretical practices which contextualise your professional practice and further study.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Explore national cinema/s in relation to their social, cultural, political and industrial contexts
- Critically analyse discourses of nation and theoretical debates concerning national cinema/s
- Investigate the impact of transnational and international production, distribution and exhibition on national cinema/s
- Critically discuss the role of cinema and specific films in the formation, representation, circulation and questioning of national identity.

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment Tasks
There are three assessment tasks.
Task 1: Presentation (25%) (CLO 1 & 2)
Task 2: Comparative Assignment (35%) (CLO 1, 2 & 4)
Task 3: Research Task (40%) (CLO 2, 3 & 4) Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
