Course Description

In this course you will investigate concepts and theories of genre in relation to historical and contemporary film texts. Locating screen genres within industry, texts and audiences, you will explore how these structures shape and affect the production of meaning in film and culture.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Identify and analyse formal qualities of specific film genres in screen texts.
  2. Critically examine the historical, industrial and cultural contexts of film genres.
  3. Synthesise formal and contextual analysis of film genres.

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery of this course may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

Task 1: Formal analysis assignment (25%) (CLO 1)

Task 2: Research assignment (35%) (CLO 2)

Task 3: Major Essay (40%) (CLO 3)
