Course Description

Designed specifically for students completing the Bachelor of Business Professional Practice program, this course provides a 48 credit point opportunity to immerse yourself in work-integrated learning, working in a partner organisation in an area relevant to your future career. Partner organisations may be from a diverse range of industries and sectors, including private industry and not-for-profit organisations.

For this course, you are expected to work around 480 hours in total for the approved host industry partner. This should be undertaken at one time, for example 12+ weeks in a ‘full-time’ capacity spread across the semester or teaching period. Using the Fair Work Commission guidelines, RMIT recommends that the maximum you should work without pay is 240 hours. Therefore, placements on this course should either be at 50% or 100% remuneration at the current minimum wage level or above.

While completing a Business Internship you will have access to academic mentoring throughout your internship, as well as specialised career and personal development opportunities through the College of Business and Law’s Professional Practice Academy.

Process/Requirements:

After enrolment and before commencement of the internship, the following must be completed:

• You are responsible for securing your own internship.
• The position must be approved by the Course Coordinator.
• A WIL Agreement must be completed by you, the host organisation, and RMIT University.
• The internship and associated documents must be recorded in the university’s InPlace WIL system.
• International internships must be registered through RMIT Global Mobility’s Mobi system.
• Assessment requirements should be read and understood prior to commencing your internship.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1: Curate and present your Bachelor of Business portfolio to reflect your suitability for a specific work opportunity. 

CLO2: Integrate and apply previous RMIT studies to current business practice, through guided experiential learning in a business context, under supervision and/or with support.

CLO3: Demonstrate professional capabilities, such as inclusivity, appropriate application of decision-making methodologies and the ability to collaborate effectively, in a workplace context. 

CLO4: Apply problem-solving and critical thinking skills to a range of workplace challenges, identifying and concept-testing solutions that are culturally appropriate and fit for purpose.

CLO5: Build on your personal narrative, and showcase and communicate enhanced employability skills using evidence from your internship.

Overview of Learning Activities

Throughout this course you will be provided with information and resources via Canvas to guide you through an experiential learning process in relation to the practical work you complete for your chosen organisation.  Before you start your proposed role and/or project, you must seek approval by the responsible academic to ensure this is in line with your current study pathway.

Learning will be supported with practical tasks; seeking and providing peer feedback; and reflective praxis. In addition, personal research and development activities and recommended readings will cement knowledge gained.

Various learning resources are available online through MyRMIT Studies/Canvas. The lecture notes and workshop notes are posted on Canvas.

RMIT Library provides extensive resources, services and study spaces. You have access to scholarly resources including course related material, books, e-books, journals and databases.

Computers and printers are available at every Library. You can access the Internet and Library e-resources. You can also access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.
