Course Description

This Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course, Start my business 01 (SB01), is the first of two 48 credit point courses that provides you with the opportunity to commence working for yourself in a supported environment with the guidance of the team at RMIT Activator during semester 1 of the fourth year of study in the Bachelor of Business Professional Practice. The business or operation start up can be from a diverse range of industries and sectors such as: private industry and not-for-profit organisations. However, it must be pre-approved for this course and cannot be anything considered unethical, inappropriate for study credit and/or illegal.

While in this course, you will be part of the College of Business and Law’s Professional Practice Academy, which provides support, mentoring and exclusive career development opportunities throughout the duration of Professional Practice studies.

In this course, you are expected to work a minimum of 480 hours towards their start-up operation. This should be undertaken at one time; for example, 12+ weeks in a ‘full-time’ capacity spread across the semester or teaching period. Unless with prior arrangement you will not receive payment during this period but may be able to apply for seed funding available in Victoria.

Process/Requirements:

After enrolment and before commencement of SB01 internship, the following must be completed:

  • A WIL Agreement must be completed by you, the host organisation (RMIT Activator), and RMIT University.
  • The internship and associated documents must be recorded in the university’s InPlace WIL system.
  • It is expected that this arrangement that will continue into Start my business 02 (SB02) and hopefully after graduation.
  • Assessment requirements should be read and understood prior to commencing your internship.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course is expected to signal the beginning of a partnership between you and RMIT Activator that will continue within study and/or after the you have graduated.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1: Apply design thinking and evaluative methodologies to conceptualise, prototype and test potential business ideas to determine feasibility and viability of a new product or service.

CLO2: Produce a robust business plan and consult with relevant specialists such as: financial advisors, investors, subject experts, and business mentors.

CLO3: Assess, understand and manage the inevitable trade-offs that occur when start-up resources are limited in the early stages of operation.

CLO4: Establish networks and foster relationships within the entrepreneurial community and/or chosen field of business in Melbourne, Victoria and beyond.

CLO5: Employ the skill of critical decision-making whilst operating in a fast-paced environment within a short timeline.

CLO6: Articulate the value proposition of an innovation or new opportunity, and communicate this to key stakeholders.

CLO7: Integrate and apply relevant disciplinary theory to start-up practice.

CLO8: Undertake reflective praxis in reviewing your professional and personal development through the start-up process, building on your personal narrative and professional portfolio.


Overview of Learning Activities

Throughout this course you will be provided with information and resources via Canvas to guide you through an experiential learning process in relation to the practical work you complete for your chosen organisation.  Before you start your proposed role and/or project, you must seek approval by the responsible academic to ensure this is in line with your current study pathway.

Learning will be supported with practical tasks; seeking and providing peer feedback; and reflective praxis. In addition, personal research and development activities and recommended readings will cement knowledge gained.

Various learning resources are available online through MyRMIT Studies/Canvas. The lecture notes and workshop notes are posted on Canvas.

RMIT Library provides extensive resources, services and study spaces. You have access to scholarly resources including course related material, books, e-books, journals and databases.

Computers and printers are available at every Library. You can access the Internet and Library e-resources. You can also access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.
