Course Description

This course aims to instil detailed knowledge of advanced polymeric materials, composites and metallic alloys with an emphasis on the analysis of cost, performance, recyclability, ease of processing and manufacturing using engineering tools and applications. You will develop in-depth understanding of the relationship and interactions between the composition, microstructure, processing methods and performance of advanced engineering materials.

Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Explain the principles of advanced engineering materials on a nano, micro and macro scale.
    2. Analyse the relationship of the materials structure to mechanical performance.
    3. Analyse materials selection databases and apply underlying principles of material science to make informed decisions in materials selection.
    4. Design appropriate manufacturing processes for polymeric materials, composites and metallic alloys.
