Course Description

This capstone course provides authentic real world challenges and opportunities for you to apply and extend the knowledge and skills you have developed through your learning so far in this program. This course will integrate and enhance your graduate capabilities and employability skills. You will apply your theoretical knowledge and project management skills to produce and implement / disseminate a comprehensive project plan that addresses a United Nations Sustainable Development Goal. In doing so, you will further develop the skills and knowledge required for effective project planning and implementation, including your ability to formulate a risk management plan, quality management plan and a communications plan, in professional contexts.  You will enhance your career readiness by reflecting critically on the professional experiences in this course to develop a sense of personal responsibility, aspiration, and resilience.  

This is a designated WIL course. This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience. 

If you are enrolled in this course as a component of your Bachelor Honours Program, your overall mark will contribute to the calculation of the weighted average mark (WAM). See the WAM information web page for more information. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes 

In course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:  

  • PLO1: Determine and apply knowledge of complex project management theory to your professional practice and/or further study 
  • PLO2: Professionally communicate to a range of audiences, demonstrating in depth knowledge of the discipline and of the needs of diverse project management stakeholders 
  • PLO3: Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to analyse, synthesise and apply theoretical knowledge, and technical skills, to formulate evidenced based solutions to industry problems or issues 
  • PLO5: Collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate intellectual independence and autonomy to solve problems and/or address industry issues and imperatives 
  • PLO6: Critically examine and reflect on the profession, in local and/or global contexts, and question accepted interpretations and decision making 


Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:  

  1. CLO1: Develop an evidenced based project management plan which addresses all elements of the project development life cycle 
  2. CLO2: Critically analyse and synthesise project management theory and apply this knowledge to project management 
  3. CLO3: Critically evaluate decision making and its impact on project success 
  4. CLO4: Apply effective team work and communication skills to develop and communicate a feasible and strategic project plan 
     


Overview of Learning Activities

You will engage in a range of learning activities in this course. Your learning in this course will include participation in lectorials, seminars, project work, class discussions, peer to peer review, group work, and opportunities to learn by engaging with industry. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both. 

 

Work integrated learning activities are included in the form of an industry/community-aligned group project which contributes to the achievement of a United Nations Sustainable Goal. Groups are mentored by an industry expert during the WIL activity.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. 

Assessment Tasks 

Assessment Task 1: Individual Essay, 20% CLO2, CLO3  

Assessment Task 2:  WIL PROJECT: Group Project for Social Benefit comprising several parts, 60%, CLO1, CLO2 and CLO4 

Assessment Task 3: Individual Reflective Journals,  20% CLO3
