Course Description

This course focuses on the significance of communication in health professional and biomedical science practice. You'll examine factors affecting professional communication, including personal values and cultural influences. The content covers key aspects such as professionalism, ethical practice, inter-professional collaboration, and digital literacy. The goal is to develop communication skills essential for culturally-safe and reflective practice in your future health and biomedical science profession. The course also addresses using communication to build inclusive communities. It explores the “me” in a discipline-specific context and your role as an emerging professional supporting patient care, clinical and laboratory practice, and/or research. Case studies presented in lectorial and tutorial sessions draw from various disciplines within the School of Health and Biomedical Sciences and insights from industry partners

Overview of Learning Activities

Students will learn by engaging with interprofessional and discipline specific case studies that will be unpacked during lectorial and or tutorial sessions. The theoretical concepts that underpin communication and professional practice will be provided by recorded lectures involving all the disciplines in the School of Health and Biomedical sciences with insights from our industry partners.

This course will use a range of learning activities including lectures and tutorial sessions, online resources and self-directed learning. Throughout the course you will work both individually and in teams. Delivery will be a combination of face to face and online.

Recorded lectures/Lectorials are the principal mode of information delivery and will present you with the key concepts. Tutorials sessions will contextualise your understanding of topics to your discipline covered in the lectures.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
