Course Description

This course provides you with an understanding of the behavioural, social and environment determinants of chronic lifestyle related disease and how these can be modified to prevent and reverse disease. The interdisciplinary nature and evidence based approach of lifestyle medicine and its ability to impact health care will be explored. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the program learning outcomes for the following programs:  

BP154 Bachelor of Psychology 

  • PLO 1 Apply breadth and depth of psychology theories, concepts and evidence in various real-world settings using a scientific approach;
  • PLO 4 Communicate to diverse audiences utilising contemporary and traditional formats and employing professional integrity, inclusivity and culturally safe practices;
  • PLO 5 Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for professional decisions and resolve challenges through application of critical thinking and reflective practice, autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team;

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:  

  1. Describe the pillars of lifestyle medicine;  
  2. Analyse how modification of behavioural, social, environmental and psychological determinants can prevent disease or improve health outcomes; 
  3. Communicate in both written and oral format to apply your knowledge to global health challenges. 


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
