Course Description

This course will enable you to gain a better understanding of the psychological, social, and cultural dimensions of health. Key principles from cognitive, developmental, and social psychology will be outlined to better equip you to understand and respond appropriately to common psychological, social, and cultural determinants and barriers of illness and health. Topics such as depression, anxiety, stress and coping will be explored. You will also be introduced to strategies to help you communicate with individuals who have a mental health concern via mental health first aid awareness.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for BP154 Bachelor of Psychology:  

  • PLO 2. Apply evidence-based knowledge to safe and effective practice in a variety of contexts, independently ad collaboratively, with emerging technological advancements.
  • PLO 4. Communicate to diverse audiences utilising contemporary and traditional formats employing professional integrity, inclusivity and culturally safe practices.


Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Explain the key cognitive, developmental and social psychology foundational principles underpinning determinants of health behaviour. 
  2. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of psychological, social, and cultural determinants of poor mental health in contemporary professional practice. 
  3. Identify and communicate with regards to legal and ethical considerations, to identify individuals with mental health conditions for onward referral, via mental health first aid awareness.
  4. Examine the various determinants of sound mental health and justify the importance of these in communicating with others.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
