Required Prior Study
You should have satisfactorily completed BIOL2538 Human Pathophysiology 1 and BIOL2539 Human Pathophysiology 2 before you commence this course. 

Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.

Course Description

This course provides you with an understanding of how the immune system protects the human body from deadly pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and parasites via the innate and adaptive immune responses. It will also explore immune-related disorders where immune dysfunction contributes to the pathological state such as allergy, autoimmunity, cancer and rejection of transplantation.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:  

  1. Conceptually map stages of the innate and adaptive immune response that protects the human body against pathogens.
  2. Critically evaluate current understanding of immune dysfunction and how it leads to allergy, autoimmunity, cancer and rejection of tissue transplantation.   
  3. Critically reflect on research into treatment of immune disorders.
  4. Analyse scientific data and justify your interpretation to your peers and industry in oral and written format.


Overview of Learning Activities

This course will use a range of learning activities including lectures and practicals, tutorial sessions, online resources and self-directed learning. Throughout the course you will work both individually and in teams to complete interactive activities. Delivery will be a mix of face to face and online. 

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course Site.
