Course Description

This course introduces you to advanced concepts of linear and non-linear modelling of engineering problems using numerical methods, particularly those related to industry.

You’ll learn about  advanced Finite Element (FE) analysis  and modelling techniques. You'll solve with competence practical problems related to mechanical components and structures.

Through engaging hands-on workshops, this course equips you to analyse and solve the  practical problems related to modern design and manufacturing technology and  familiarizes you with up-to-date commercial engineering software widely used in industry both in Australia and overseas.

If you are enrolled in this course as a component of your Bachelor Honours Program, your overall mark will contribute to the calculation of the weighted average mark (WAM).

Program Learning Outcomes

This course is an option course so it is not required to contribute to the development of program learning outcomes (PLOs) though it may assist your achievement of several PLOs for the following programs:

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the major theories, approaches and methodologies used in finite element analysis;
  2. Implement finite element method using commercial codes;
  3. Apply and assess (or Design) the application of finite element analysis to real world engineering designs;
  4. Synthesis and critically analyse results of FEA modelling;
  5. Ability to communicate effectively, not only with engineers but also with the community at large.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

The subject will be conducted in a manner which facilitates the development of an adult learning capability. The objective of the lectures and tutorials is not to convey distilled fact to be reproduced by students but to provide a guide to where learning effort should be directed and to identify problem areas which need to be addressed in an interactive and participatory manner. This approach seeks to emulate the way learning occurs in the work environment - by initiative rather than by direction.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through the Canvas Course Site.
