Course Description

With the growing trend of digitalisation, industries are experiencing a large number of implementations of technologies applicable throughout the value chain. Advanced technologies are forecasted to be equipped for delivering sustainable design, construction, and operation practices. This course is designed to provide students with knowledge and competencies to adapt to and/or implement the digital environment. The course offers awareness and practical skills on several technologies used for data acquisition and analysing, digital tools, digital manufacturing and digital modelling and visualising including laser scanning, photogrammetry, robotics and automations, drones, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), internet of thing (IoT) and enabling technologies, building information modelling (BIM) digital twin and artificial intelligence (AI) that are driving the digital transformations of contemporary practices.

Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) in determining your award level. (This applies to students who commence enrolment in a bachelor honours program from 1 January 2016 onwards. See the WAM information web page for more information.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for (BH077 Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure):

  • PLO1: Demonstrate an in-depth understanding and knowledge of fundamental engineering and scientific theories, principles and concepts and apply advanced technical knowledge in specialist domain of engineering.
  • PLO2: Utilise mathematics and engineering fundamentals, software, tools and techniques to design engineering systems for complex engineering challenges.
  • PLO4: Apply systematic problem solving, design methods and information and project management to propose and implement creative and sustainable solutions with intellectual independence and cultural sensitivity.
  • PLO6: Develop and demonstrate the capacity for autonomy, agility and reflection of own learning, career and professional development and conduct.

On completion of this course, you should be able to achieve the following Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):

  1. Develop knowledge about emerging technologies, methods, trends, and developments in the building and construction industry.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to critically appraise the applicability of various digital technologies integrated throughout the lifecycle of the built environment.
  3. Identify innovative solutions for contemporary work practices by leveraging digital technologies.
  4. Develop a basic prototype/digital platform for design, construction and maintenance and operation functions aiming at sustainable outcomes.

Overview of Learning Activities

Practicals and computer lab sessions will be conducted to provide hands-on experience on various technologies and to understand their operations within a problem-based learning environment. The students will work individually and collaboratively during the lectures and tutorials.
