Course Description

The supply chain context determines the potential value of automation technology. In this course you will learn about the application of automation in variety of logistical and supply chain business environments.

Logistics is focused on delivering customer service, be it direct to consumers or to supply chain partners. This customer orientation will be used to explore the potential value of automation. Commercial business models and imperatives will be investigated in relation to how the sector evaluates automation initiatives and leverages the power of automation to build robustness.

Logistician sector norms will be examined in this course to understanding the terminology and the differences between the various industries served. The measurement, racking, storage, volumetric, and industry standards will be identified especially regarding automation technology.

Logistical and supply chain automation does not happen in isolation. The barriers and enablers to implementation and optimisation will be identified in this course. Social factors, such as cultural acceptance to change and inter-organisational trust, will be analysed regarding how they facilitate automation uptake. Likewise, system maturity, both regarding information technology and operating procedures, will be correlated with viability of enhancing automation.

CLO1 Abstract the core concepts typically taken by logistical firms to evaluate automation initiatives to enhance business decision making.

CLO2 Expertly judge the state of logistics and supply chain automation in practice to increase the productivity of real-world businesses.

CLO3 Synthesise the barriers and enablers to logistics and supply chain automation to boost the successful uptake of automation initiatives.

CLO4 Critically evaluate the viability of automating logistical processes using commercial measures to inform business decision making.

CLO5 Critically analyse the interactions between social and technical systems when automating logistics and supply chains to increase the viability of business initiatives.

CLO6 Work independently or in teams to develop and communicate logistics and supply chain automation business evaluations and impactful visualisation techniques.


Overview of Learning Activities

This course uses highly structured learning activities to guide your learning process and prepare you for the assessments. The activities are a combination of individual, peer-supported and facilitator-guided activities, and where possible project-led, with opportunities for feedback throughout.

The learning activities have been designed to assist you in the development of a number of important graduate capabilities. Authentic and industry-relevant learning is critical to this course, and you will be encouraged to critically compare and contrast what is happening in the logistics and supply chain profession, and to use your personal insights.

You are expected to consistently apply yourself to the course throughout the semester. Social learning is another important component, and you are expected to participate in class and group activities, share drafts of work and resources and give and receive peer feedback. You will be expected to work efficiently and effectively with others to achieve outcomes greater than those that you might have achieved alone.

Hybrid fortnightly workshops will be provided outside of normal working hours for online learners in parallel with those able to attend in person. These workshops will be recorded for asynchronous learners and are designed to supplement the material provided on the RMIT Canvas site and the recommended readings. Discussions in these workshops are specifically designed using group work and problem-solving activities so that you may critically analyse topics covered throughout the course. The workshop setting also provides the opportunity for you to critically evaluate problems and develop confidence in your ability to apply theoretical issues to practical situations.


Overview of Learning Resources

A range of recordings, texts and articles will be referred to in class. You will be given a list of suggested readings and audio-visual recordings, but you are required to undertake further research throughout the duration of the course. Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or in online discussion forums through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and individual consultation.

RMIT Library provides extensive resources, services and study spaces. All RMIT students have access to scholarly resources including course related material, books, e-books, journals and databases.

Computers and printers are available at every Library. You can access the Internet and Library e-resources. You can also access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.
