Course Description

This unit defines the competency required to Determine and confirm client business expectations.

When you undertake this unit you will develop the ability to gather, identify and record client business requirements, and to verify that the information is accurate, relevant and complete.

The outcome of the unit is for you to be able to gather information to determine business system requirements to meet a client’s expectations and needs.

Learning Outcomes

Activities in this course aim to develop your communication skills in negotiating with clients and stakeholders and to introduce you to project management skills and tasks. You will work as part of a team to ascertain the needs and expectations of a client in developing a project.

The activities aim to enhance your understanding and knowledge in determining and clarifying business problems, their scope and the means of gathering information about the cause of the problem and the possible solution to that problem.

Through class observation, activities and assignment you will:

  • Learn how to ascertain and clarify what a client’s needs or problems are
  • Learn how to gather information from a client and various sources
  • Develop solutions for the identified problem or need
  • Gather information to establish the system requirements and problems
  • Confirm and document system specifications for client approval 


Overview of Assessment

Assessment in this course is competency based.  You must be competent in all elements to successfully complete the course.

Your assessment will involve a range of activities and an integrated assignment which will include a number of courses within the Certificate IV Information Technology Networking program where you will be separately assessed in those courses.

The assessment will involve both in-class and group-based elements. It will also involve observation of your understanding, knowledge and practice of the elements in both the theoretical and practical environment.

You will work in a team on a range of activities leading to the production of an integrated assignment and an integrated project. The major part of your assessment will be in these integrated tasks.

Assessment in this course will involve the following major activity: Integrated Assignment 

Integrated Assignment. You are required to use investigative techniques to obtain information and document the business system problem, produce a clear statement of business expectations and needs, including critical business requirements.  This task relates to Elements 1, 2 & 3.
