Course Description

         

This elective unit deals with the knowledge, skills, judgments, values and attitudes needed to practise as a dental hygienist in an orthodontic environment, as part of the oral health care team.

 

The purpose of this unit is to build on the competencies already developed in the core orthodontic unit and apply these in a setting devoted to the treatment of orthodontic conditions, within the context of dental hygiene practice.

 

Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

         

This unit should be assessed after achievement of the following related competency units:

 

·         TAFEDH023 - Perform orthodontic procedures

·         TAFEDH015 – Manage patients with simple to complex dental hygiene treatment needs

 

The unit should also be assessed in conjunction with competency unit(s) related to planning/delivery of the Advanced Diploma of Oral Health (Dental Hygiene).

Elements:

1. Prepare surgery for orthodontic pre- treatment, treatment and post treatment phases.

 

2.Prepare the patient for the pre-orthodontic treatment phase

3.Place elastomeric separators

4. Remove separators and prepare the patient for the placement of bands/tubes and brackets

5. Select, fit and cement orthodontic bands

6. Assess and prepare teeth and accurately bond orthodontic brackets and tubes

7. Provide patient education and oral hygiene instruction for the care of the oral tissues and orthodontic appliances 

8. Remove bands and brackets

9.Place bonded retainers
