PROJECT A model for using course experience data to improve teaching & learning
DEPARTMENT/FACULTY Justice and Youth Studies, FELCS
TEAM LEADER Mark Longmuir (Youth Affairs Course Coordinator)
TEAM MEMBERS David MacKenzie (project developer), David Maunders, Kerry Montero, Rob Nabben, Alex Agius
PROJECT SUMMARY The Student Feedback Evaluation Project undertaken by the course team in Youth Affairs has used an extended cyclical collection of student feedback information – including course experience assessments (CEQ) each semester, common student evaluation forms for course subjects, mid-semester unit evaluations and an end-of-course evaluation day – to improve teaching and learning in the BA (Youth Affairs) and student experience of the course.

PROJECT Development of Course Management System
DEPARTMENT/FACULTY Built Environment, Constructed Environment
TEAM LEADER Hendrikus Berkers
TEAM MEMBERS Hendrikus Berkers, Stephanie Cuthbertson, Sue Scarlett, Mike Lennon, Michael Goss & the Department of Built Environment
PROJECT SUMMARY To meet the requirements of a seamless structure, the Department of Built Environment developed a course quality assurance model to align VET Departments with course teams as practiced by the Higher Education Sector. The Department developed a Course Management System that maps the Teaching and Learning Strategy at a course level.

PROJECT Carlton Library Learning Centre Facilities Development
DEPARTMENT/FACULTY Carlton Library, University Library
TEAM LEADER Annette Sullivan
TEAM MEMBERS Annette Sullivan, Bernadene Sward, Cheryl Lewis Fitzgerald, Carlton Library Team
PROJECT SUMMARY In 1999, the Carlton Library developed new facilities in support of the University’s student-centred focus to provide a flexible learning environment catering to students’ diverse ways of learning.  This convergence of existing library services with new learning technologies provided a model for similar developments at other RMIT Library sites, and has enabled the Library to forge exciting partnerships with students and staff that increases their capacity to adapt to new learning technologies.

PROJECT Implementing a New Training System in the Community Services Industry
DEPARTMENT/FACULTY Social & Community Services, FELCS
TEAM LEADER Christine Robertson
TEAM MEMBERS Christine Robertson, Georgina Mountford, Julia Silverman, Helen Georgiou, Mandy Patmore, Rosemary Deakin
PROJECT SUMMARY The imperative to deliver quality, client focussed training under the new National Training System involved a collaborative, adaptive, team based approach from the RMIT Social and Community Services Department. The team identified the pedagogical, administrative and resource issues involved in the transition and responded by planning and developing processes and resources required to meet the challenges for effective transition in 2000.

PROJECT Establishment of Policies and Procedures for Industry Based Programs
DEPARTMENT/FACULTY School of Management, Faculty of Business
TEAM LEADER Kate Tusler
TEAM MEMBERS Kate Tusler, Diana Fittipaldi
PROJECT SUMMARY RMIT School of Management has established developed and implemented a project based on the procedures and policies for the Traineeship program within a University structure. VET and other departments at RMIT have a need for an integrated cohesive system which can be used University-wide and adapted for industry and community based programs.

PROJECT Business Computing 1 redevelopment
DEPARTMENT/FACULTY School of Business Information Technology, RMIT Business
TEAM LEADER Joan Richardson
TEAM MEMBERS Joan Richardson, Bill Davey, Sarah Guss, Ken Miller, Penny Mercer, Graham White, Kiersten Lethbridge, James Quealy, Rod McCrochan, John Mitchell, Ruth O’Rourke
PROJECT SUMMARY The Business Computing 1 subject team began a redevelopment process in 1997 aimed at modularising content to ensure a student focus, usability across the sectors of the University and the incorporation of new technologies into current teaching modes to diminish geographical and time boundaries.  Once technologies geared towards flexible delivery were investigated and adopted periodic evaluation processes were put in place.  A continuous improvement cycle was embarked upon.  Students and staff evaluated teaching processes, assessment tools and the design of the CDROM and WEB site.  The results of student surveys, focus groups, interviews and staff evaluations were reviewed and incorporated into the ongoing culture of improvement institutionalised in the subject.

PROJECT “Be Aware” Week
DEPARTMENT/FACULTY EEO Unit, HRM Services
TEAM LEADER Jill Duncan
TEAM MEMBERS Gemma Pinnell, Joanne Forster, Eleonora Butera, Margaret Petrie, John Thorne, Melanie Jennings, Daniela Montano
PROJECT SUMMARY “Be Aware” Week (BAW) is an annual project of the Personal Safety & Security Sub Committee (PS&SSC) of the Occupational Health & Safety Committee (OH&SC).  The theme week was instigated in 1996 in response to student and staff concerns about personal safety of campus. BAW is planned, delivered and evaluated by a working party of the PS&SSC and is representative of the RMIT community.

PROJECT Disabled Access Audit & Improvement program
DEPARTMENT/FACULTY Campus Planning, Property Services
Disability Liaison Unit, Academic Services
TEAM LEADER Laurie Cuttiford, Martin Fathers, Matthew Brett
TEAM MEMBERS Laurie Cuttiford, Martin Fathers, Matthew Brett
PROJECT SUMMARY RMIT has an extremely diverse portfolio of physical properties that it is responsible for providing and managing.  Similarly, the people who work, visit and use the facilities have many different needs.  Access for those with disabilities is one extremely important aspect that needs to be provided.   This project responds to that need.

In this Award Category the judges recommend the following two projects for Commendation.

PROJECT Community Health Program – Continuous Quality Improvement
DEPARTMENT/FACULTY Health Service, Student Affairs, Resources
TEAM LEADER Enisa Kasar, Felicity Hood
TEAM MEMBERS Enisa Kasar, Felicity Hood
PROJECT SUMMARY The RMIT Health Service offers a Health Educational Program comprising Occupational and Community Health Programs.  Occupational Health Programs provide health screening, protection and preparation for those students and staff working in areas where there are identified health risks, such as Hepatitis B and noise induced hearing loss.  Community Health Programs relate to health issues that affect study and academic success, such as sexual health and drug and alcohol use.  In 1997 the RMIT Health Service developed documentation for its Health Education Programs, which until then, had been delivered without a clearly articulated rationale or aim.  This project received a quality commendation in 1998.  The Health Education Program has since undergone a series of changes that address the changing needs of the university, as outlined in the Strategic Plan and the changing health needs of students and staff and the various industries that they represent.  This project specifically targeted changes in documentation and evaluation of the Health Education Program.

PROJECT First Site Gallery
DEPARTMENT/FACULTY Art, Culture and Community Services, RMIT Union
TEAM LEADER Nicole Ryan
TEAM MEMBERS Nicole Ryan, Colleen Burke, Tony Lloyd, Fiona Whitworth, Robert Graham, Michelle Stewart
PROJECT SUMMARY Over the past two years, First Site Gallery has committed itself to improving its administration, publicity and exhibition procedures in order to raise the standard and quality of service to students.  The Gallery Committee embarked upon this improvement project with the expectation that it would benefit students in their professional practice, improve the cultural life on campus and promote the creative excellence of RMIT students.
