University Sport
University Sport involves opportunities
for students to represent their University in sporting competitions at both
State and National levels. Major events throughout the year, coupled with
smaller Championships, allow athletes the chance to compete against their
peers in both individual and team sports. Up to 40 sports are contested throughout
the course of the year.
Uni Games offer students the chance to meet new people, participate in the
sports they love, as well as enjoy a social atmosphere – all whilst
representing RMIT University as an RMIT Redback. Students who participate
in Uni Games events share a better sense of student life, a more enjoyable
experience as a student, and create networks and friendships that surpass
their tertiary years.
University Sport is governed in Australia by Australian University Sport.

How to get involved…
Team Manager
Team Managers play a fundamental role in the coordination of both team and individual sports. TMs host trials, assist Coaches to select squads, coordinate team paperwork and payments, as well as create a communication link between RMIT Union Sport & Recreation and participants. TMs can be athletes, or choose not to participate but coordinate the team (however in most cases TMs need to be an RMIT student).
This role requires excellent communication, time management, interpersonal and organisational skills. TMs are given a high level or responsibility and are expected to deliver results within the given time frames when working with their team of the staff of RMIT Union Sport & Recreation.
The role of TM is voluntary; however it may lead to opportunities for casual work within RMIT Union Sport & Recreation. Although the lead time for the role is significant, it does not require many hours of work each week in preparation for events, rather that TMs are organised and their team well informed. The role does require that TMs travel with their teams to events, conduct and attend all training sessions booked for the team (with the guidance of a Coach where relevant), as well as be responsible for the team’s behaviour whilst representing RMIT University. TMs are also responsible for actively promoting to and recruiting new players for their teams, as supported by the efforts of Sport & Recreation staff in promoting to students. TMs must be involved in selecting a Sports Trainer and Coach for their team where necessary.
Sports Trainer
The Sports Trainer’s main role is to act as both a first aider for their team and to coordinate all pre and post match injury management. STs must have a broad knowledge of first aid, have previous experience in a Sports Trainer role and be available to attend all meetings specified. A minimum Level 2 First Aid qualification is preferred.
During events, STs maintain constant contact with the University Team Manager, in regard to injuries, emergencies, reports and first aid stock. The role is voluntary, with all first aid stock and equipment to be provided by RMIT Union Sport & Recreation. STs may also be required to attend to the needs of other teams’ players as required throughout events.
Coach
The primary role of the of the Coach is to select and coach University Sport teams in the lead up to and during any Australian University Sport competition. The position is essentially for a contract period and the hours required to perform the duties of the position will fluctuate.
The sports coach must have a broad knowledge of their chosen sport, have previous experience in coaching the sport and be available to attend and conduct all training sessions. Coaches will work directly with TMs to coordinate their teams both prior to and during events.
Athlete/participant
As a participant of any Uni Games event, students represent their University to achieve the best possible outcome both on and off the field. Athletes can step up into leadership positions such as Team Manager or Coach, if they believe they can manage their contribution to the team and their time well.
As an RMIT Redback, students are upholding years of sporting tradition and results, and as such, are expected to respect their position on the team and also respect their colleagues. Participation in Uni Games teams is also a wonderful way to integrate yourself into student life at RMIT, meet students your age and outside your course, as well as create a memorable experience of your time at the University. Athletes who represent the University are expected to have a very good level of skill in their chosen sport. Athletes can also cross-accredit during some events, which means they can belong to more than one sporting team (i.e. swimming and water polo).
