Program Description – Diploma of Arts (Product Design)The Diploma of Arts (Product Design) is an intensive program designed to develop the skills and knowledge which will enable graduates to pursue careers in the product design industry in a range of positions or to work as an independent designer in Australia or overseas. Starting from a project brief: students will be shown traditional product development techniques and media as well as the latest industry tools and practices to formulate solutions to design problems. Students will be guided through the process of developing new consumer products (such as electrical enclosures, toys or kitchenware) resolving practical, manufacturing and environmental issues. Mode and Duration2 Years Full-time Entrance requirementsCurrent Year 12 Applicants: There are no prerequisite studies. Non-Year 12 (Mature Age) Applicants: Are encouraged to apply and should either be currently employed in industry or have evidence of experience and/or ability to meet the demands of the program. |
Graduates may specialise in a number of areas within the scope of product development. They may branch into computer aided design, illustration, modelmaking, furniture and lighting, toy design, home renovation, special effects for film and television or as a liaison between engineering and production. Product designers work as part of a design or manufacturing team, alternatively they may undertake freelance work.
