Recognition of Prior Learning – School of Design (TAFE)
What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?
RPL is an assessment process to obtain formal recognition of competencies, skills and knowledge you have acquired through:
- Previous informal training/education
- Work experience
- Life experience
These may be used to demonstrate achievement in a unit of competency without having to attend formal training.
How is RPL different from Credit Transfer?
RPL is an assessment process that focuses on the recognition of your formal and informal learning. Credit Transfer is a separate administrative process that recognises your competency in courses that have been awarded at another TAFE Institute or Registered Training Organisation.
What are the benefits of RPL?
- Completing your training in a shorter period of time
- Eliminating the need for training in skills and knowledge you already have
- A reduced study load
- Reduced costs such as learning resources, travel, child care etc
- Advancing more quickly to higher qualifications
- Better documentation of your skills and knowledge that you can use for job applications or career planning.
- Meet registration requirements for your professional board or association, as relevant
