Dual-trade training opportunities in Electrical and Instrumentation

A collaborative approach to training

RMIT University (RMIT) in consultation with industry and Australian Apprenticeship Centres (AAC) has identified a need for training and education in industrial instrumentation and control. This demand is largely driven by industries need for electricians capable of working on process control instrumentation equipment and systems.

To better service the needs of industries that are remotely located, RMIT in association with VECCI Apprenticeship Centres, and Adicon offer a range of flexible training solutions. For the convenience of employers and students unable to commute to Melbourne for training on a weekly basis, the following options are available:

  • Block release classes delivered in Melbourne.
  • Day release classes using a blended learning model incorporating two-way video conference and eLearning delivered at RMIT Hamilton (Vic) campus.

For students wishing to commute to Melbourne on a weekly basis, the following option is available:

  • Day and night release classes at RMIT Melbourne campus.

Combinations of the above delivery modes can also be arranged.

Nationally accredited qualifications and customised short courses can be tailored to clients’ specific needs. RMIT will work with industry to identify skills gaps, perform training needs analysis and assist clients’ with identifying training options that best suit their needs.

RMIT teamed up with automation training provider SAGE Didactic to deliver a breakthrough in instrumentation and control training, which produced quality training outcomes above academic requirements.

Programs available

  • Certificate IV in Electrical-Instrumentation UEE40410 ‘dual-trade’ electrical/instrumentation.
    • Five year ab initio apprenticeship.
    • Adult apprenticeship or post-apprenticeship (usually two years) program for students with a certificate III electrical or equivalent, or an A-class electrical license.
    • Trade, technical, paraprofessional and professionally qualified engineering persons from other disciplines (that are not electricians) can study stages 4 & 5 (two years) of this program as a Skill-Set, and then be issued an RMIT Statement of Attainment along with a Certificate of Recognition detailing the competencies passed.

Outcomes for industry

  • Qualified workforce.
  • Skilled staff able to work across multiple disciplines.
  • Flexibility of staff able to be deployed across a range of tasks, work areas, equipment and technologies.
  • Multi skilled, cross-trained employees licensed to work on mains-powered equipment in addition to instrumentation (where student possess, or will possess an A-class electrical license).
  • Better qualified and knowledgeable employees able to contribute to an organisation’s productivity and bottom line.

Fees and incentives

Program fees are dependant on the training service provided and a variety of eligibility criteria that is applied to the education and training system. For example, under the Victorian Government’s Skills Reform Policy, State Government Subsidised Places (SGSP) may be available to students that meet the necessary eligibility criteria. Employer and employee incentives may be available.

RMIT University will aim to maximise the cost effectiveness of training wherever possible.
Government incentives for ab initio and adult apprentices are available and can be in the order of $20k per employee.
