Stephen Farthing studied painting at St Martin’s School of Art and the Royal College of Art.

By 1980 he was a Tutor at the Royal College of Art. From 1990- 2000 he was Ruskin Master to the University of Oxford. His work represented Britain at the 1989 Sao Paulo Biennale. He was executive director of the New York Academy of Art 2000 - 2004 when he was appointed Rootstein Hopkins Chair of Drawing at the University of Arts London.
He is represented by Purdy Hicks Gallery in London, Honorary Curator of The Royal Academy Collections and Chairman of the Royal Academy Exhibitions Committee. As a writer he was executive editor of Art: The Whole Story T&H, The Sketch Books of Jocelyn Herbert, RA Publishing, 1001 Paintings you should see Before You Die, Cassell.
