Since 2000, Bachelor of Design (Fashion) students have taken part in the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in the Flowers n’ Fashion display. Their creations have proved to be popular with public and media alike.
Students were invited to submit designs inspired by the theme for the competition in 2010. Twelve finalists were selected to realise their proposed prototypes on site within the royal Exhibition Building over less than 2 days. There were cash prizes and trophies for the winners and runners up designs which best fulfilled the design and exhibition criteria.
Floriography, or the language of flowers, was a popular means of communication during the Victorian era although the origins of the practice may be traced to Turkey and even further back to Persia. Flowers and floral arrangements were used to send coded messages, allowing individuals to express sentiments that, for a variety of reasons, could not be spoken.
Project aim
For the student to develop designs utilising foliage (80% of materials used should be plants/flowers) which expressed creatively the theme “Monument to water” whilst working within a $200 budget.
Design, construct and maintain a prototype of flowers and foliage that would maintain its integrity under exhibition lighting conditions for the 5 day duration of International Flower and Garden Show.
