About Governance at RMIT

The governing authority of RMIT University is the Council, its prime responsibilities are set out under the RMIT Act 1992 and in the Council Governance Charter.

The Academic Board which is also established under the Act provides advice to Council. It is the principal academic authority and has oversight of the academic programs of the university.

Council delegates the operational aspects of managing the university to the Vice-Chancellor and President.

Governance processes ensure: that there are defined rights and responsibilities; that there is clarity about who can make decisions and any constraints on those decisions and that information on these governance processes is accessible. These governance processes are defined in:

  • Delegations of authority that detail the staffing, financial and legal matters that Council has delegated to the Vice-Chancellor

  • RMIT policies which are university wide. They are governing principles that mandate or constrain actions to help ensure compliance, enhance the University’s mission or reduce institutional risk, the principles may be expressed in statutes, regulations or rules as well as in policies and procedures

  • Planning and budgeting cycle which illustrates the governance and management responsibilities in the development of the strategic and business plans and the annual budget.
