Purpose of the Program

This program aims to develop research capable graduates who will be leaders in media and communication. The emphasis in honours is on research, whether within academic or professional contexts.

As an honours graduate you will be able to ask and respond to critical and creative questions relevant to communication, technology and media. You will engage with and respond to ideas from your disciplinary experience and extend these using your interdisciplinary and collaborative skills. You will have a knowledge of research as a creative and critical practice as it relates to your individual field and discipline. You will develop as an investigator who demonstrates academic rigour in your own and other disciplines. You will bring research and leadership to complex situations including the development of projects and learning, and research activities in individual or group pursuit. You will have a deep knowledge of your field and of research practice, and an enhanced capacity to identify and investigate problems in contemporary media, communication and creative fields. You will offer applied as well as theoretical approaches in responding to these.

In your honours year, you will undertake an individually negotiated research project, as a capstone experience. This project will enable you to synthesise and integrate your knowledge, connect theory and practice, and demonstrate your holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes.

This program will help you to negotiate and contribute knowledge to the immense changes occurring within contemporary media and communication systems in both academic and professional contexts.  You will engage in a model of ‘process based learning’ in an interdisciplinary research context, which will provide you with the relevant skills for managing such change within industry and research.

Research as a concept and practice underwrites all activities within the program with an emphasis on integrating theory and practice so that you will have a deep knowledge of the role, function, and importance of research to your future practice. Honours is also recognised as providing preparation for a higher degree such as a research Masters or Doctorate (PhD).

External accreditation and industry links

In Australia there are no professional bodies that recognise or accredit programs for the Bachelor of Media and Communication (Honours) program.

However, research projects undertaken within the program are able to be aligned to industry in two ways. The primary way in which this occurs is through research projects that choose to investigate a problem with a specific industry sector or company as a partner. A second way in which this occurs is through research projects that investigate an industry relevant problem to produce a research report that engages with industry directly.

Staff within the Honours program have a range of links to industry, including membership of relevant industry boards or councils, professional practices, research consultancies with industry, and membership of professional bodies. All honours staff are active researchers in their respective fields and disciplines.
