Purpose of the Program

The Environmental Engineering program is designed to ensure that, as a graduate, you should be able to perform professionally and effectively in all environmental engineering-related fields and demonstrate that you have acquired associated capabilities and skills as defined by the national accreditation body, Engineers Australia.

As a graduate engineer you will be capable of integrating the social, environmental and economic demands with the technical possibilities of each new challenge. You will be an effective problem identifier and solver, skilled in quantitative analysis and effective decision making; someone who can maximise the benefits of each project while satisfying all stakeholders.  During your studies, you will find yourself working in teams and relying on communication processes to achieve the project goals. You will come to understand and appreciate that, in a rapidly changing world, ongoing learning is a key ingredient of your success in this field.

The objectives of the Environmental Engineering program are to:

  • ensure that as an environmental engineering graduate you are capable of planning, designing, implementing and managing projects in a socially, economically and ecologically sustainable manner.
  • provide you, as an environmental engineering graduate, with the ability to contribute and perform effectively in all environmental engineering fields. For example, to design wetlands and systems to improve water quality and conservation and to work with the chemicals industry to minimise the toxic impacts of industrial processes and by-products. Other examples include the development of cleaner production technologies in farming, rehabilitation of mining sites, cleaning up contaminated land, working on land salinity problems, preparation of environmental impact studies, design of modern landfill sites and water resource studies. 
  • engage you, as a student, in real-life environmental problems and case studies. This involves working on projects with community groups and companies as part of project-based courses run in the four years of the program.

In Year 4 you will undertake a capstone experience - a culmination and application of the knowledge and skills you have acquired during your program to date. This capstone experience comprises two courses (OENG1167 Engineering Capstone Project Part A and OENG1168 Engineering Capstone Project Part B) totalling 24 credit points. You will investigate a research topic relevant to the environmental engineering profession and undertake related practical engineering experience in industry or a simulated environmental engineering work environment.

This program is primarily delivered in face-to-face mode at the City Campus. While most courses in the program are delivered on campus, others are delivered online.

Articulation and pathways

Graduates of the the RMIT Bachelor of Environmental Science program may be eligible to complete the Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental Engineering)(Honours) in two years or less with credit.

If you have qualifications from another institution, you may be able to claim credit which will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. 

Pathways refer to related programs for which you may be eligible once you have graduated from your current program. Upon successful completion of this program, you may be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University, including a Masters of Engineering (MEng) or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree.

Entrance requirements

Very Important: This plan is being phased out. 

BH080 - Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental Engineering)(Honours) plan has been discontinued and will no longer accept new students after Semester 2 2022.

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4 —
A study score of at least 20 in Mathematical Methods (Any) or Maths: Specialist Maths; and a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent.

External accreditation and industry links

External Accreditation

The Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental Engineering) (Honours) is fully accredited by Engineers Australia. Engineers Australia is the professional body responsible for the accreditation of higher education programs that prepare students to practise as professional engineers. Engineers Australia is a signatory to the Washington Accord. This means that the program is internationally recognised and graduates are able to practise as professional engineers in many countries around the world. Graduates of the Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental Engineering) (Honours) are eligible for graduate and/or professional membership of Engineers Australia.

Industry Links

The School of Engineering, through its Industry Advisory Committee, maintains strong links with water and wastewater treatment, groundwater, water resources, land reclamation, sustainability and environment and environmental protection industries. As members of the Industry Advisory Committee, employers and professionals from these industries have contributed to both the initial development and ongoing improvement of this program. Their involvement ensures that the program remains relevant to your needs as a graduate and to the needs of employers.

Many of the teaching staff within the program are practising (or have been) industry professionals with extensive industry experience and contact networks. This experience, when integrated into teaching and learning practice, enriches your learning environment and networks.

These networks are further enhanced by the School's Work Integrated Learning courses, which provide you with an opportunity to undertake supervised work placement in environmental engineering-related areas.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University, you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course-related materials such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service, you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments, or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.
