Purpose of the Program

The Bachelor of Science (Dean's Scholar, Mathematics) (Honours) is a research-oriented, four-year undergraduate program in science which includes an integrated Honours year. After graduating from this program, you will be qualified to apply your advanced knowledge and research capability in your chosen discipline to professional work or further learning. This program is a preferred pathway into higher degrees by research such as a PhD program.

The program will:

  • give you a sound knowledge of both fundamental and advanced mathematical theory
  • expose you to a wide range of mathematical models, approaches and software
  • enable you  to select and apply appropriate mathematical theories, techniques and software to a wide range of problems
  • expose you to related fields of study, such as environmental modelling, finance, statistics or information security
  • develop your knowledge of the types of industry which employ mathematicians and the types of tasks they undertake
  • enable you to become highly employable in the mathematics field and capable of further study
  • provide you with the opportunity to develop the generic skills and abilities to operate effectively in professional settings that involve mathematical and statistical expertise. These include communication skills, technology literacy, and the ability to work in a team and interact with others
  • identify the need for an ethical approach to your work.

ONP2450 Science Honours Project 1 (12CP) and ONP2452 Science Honours Project 2 serve as a capstone experience - a culmination and application of knowledge and skills from your prior studies. Regular interactions with your supervisor(s) will allow you to obtain technical advice, to construct a milestone(s) plan and get feedback on your progress. You will respond to real world problems using the knowledge and competencies acquired during your program to propose solutions.

This program requires on-campus attendance. Courses include on-line components.

Articulation and pathways

If you have completed the first year of the BSc(Math) undergraduate program or an equivalent program with a GPA of at least 3.5, you will be eligible to apply for transfer into the second year of the the BSc(Dean's Scholar, Mathematics)(Hons) program.

This program is a preferred pathway into higher degree by research programs such as PhD and Masters by research programs within the School of Science. For a list of PhD programs offered by the School of Science, please see the Postgraduate Research page.

You may receive up to 96 credit points towards an appropriate two-year Masters by coursework program on completion
of the BSc(Dean's Scholar, Mathematics)(Hons) program.

Entrance requirements

This program is intended for capable and highly motivated students who want research training through hands-on participation in research projects throughout the program. The number of places in the program is limited so entry is competitive.  Prior tertiary study must show evidence of academic success.

Program entry requirements
Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent. For information on international qualifications and corresponding entry requirements that are equivalent to Australian academic entry requirements, see the Country equivalents web page.

Prerequisites
Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4— a study score of at least 25 in mathematical methods (CAS) or specialist mathematics and a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English.

English language:
For international students, a minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English equivalents web page.

External accreditation and industry links

This award is not accredited by an external body.

Mathematical Sciences is formally linked to industry through its Industry Advisory Committees (IAC) and through various consulting and research projects undertaken by staff.  Valuable input from IAC industry representatives is a major driver for change in the Mathematics program, particularly with regard to industry trends and future graduate capabilities, the use of state-of-the-art mathematical software, the introduction of specialisations and, most importantly, support for the introduction of Work Integrated Learning (WIL). Work Integrated Learning is delivered in Years 2 & 3  of the program through the use of guest lecturers, visits to industry, industry projects and, where possible, student placements in industry. The annual Career Afternoon in Semester 1 is a key opportunity to meet representatives from industry, discuss career opportunities in mathematics  and choose your option courses accordingly. Students from all years are invited.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University, you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course-related materials such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service, you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop, you can access the RMIT wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments, or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.
