Top of pagePurpose of the Program
The aim of the program is for you to develop your theoretical and technical knowledge and skills in the discipline of photography, including an interactive combination of techniques, creative practice, and critical thinking. The program emphasises the need for a personal exploration of the underlying meaning of photographic communication.
Your learning activities will be studio-based experiences that are designed to mirror professional practice and may include discussion, brainstorming, feedback, critiquing and peer reviews.
The Photography Major Project course (VART 3599) will enable you to engage in an investigative project based on an issue relating to your areas of interest. This is designed as a capstone experience to enable you to synthesise and integrate knowledge, connect theory and practice as well as demonstrate holistic achievement of program learning outcomes.
As a graduate of this photography program, you will be a responsive and reflective professional who can work efficiently, both independently and collaboratively. This program will prepare you to respond with expertise to the demands and developments in your chosen photographic field.

Successful completion of RMIT's Diploma of Photography and Digital Imaging guarantees entry into this program with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study).
Successful completion of RMIT's Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts guarantees entry into this program with 48 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 semester full-time study). To be eligible for guaranteed entry you must have completed the following units in the Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts:
- VART6565C Enhance, manipulate and output photo images (CUAPHI403)
- VART6366C Refine digital art techniques (CUADIG508)
- VART6361C Realise a body of creative work (CUAPPR501)
- VART6380C Extend expertise in a specialised art form to professional level (CUAPPR606)
- VART6376C Originate a body of independent creative work (CUAPPR601)
- VART6378C Extend professional expertise across new art forms and media (CUAACD602)
If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.
If you successfully complete this program with a GPA of 2.0 or above, you will be guaranteed entry into the Bachelor of Arts (Photography) (Honours).
If you successfully complete this program you will be guaranteed entry into the Master of Photography with 48 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 semester full-time study).

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school) qualification.

Prerequisites
Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English.
International English language requirement
A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.
Selection task
All applicants must complete and submit the selection task. Some applicants may be required to attend a folio presentation.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
